 Global Mission

"Go make disciples of all nations."

We believe God's Spirit is moving across the globe!  Our annual World Mission Conference highlights and raises support for the global work of Jesus Christ.  First Presbyterian has partnered with churches around the world to work for the advancing Kingdom of God.  Here is a list of our current mission partnerships.

CUBA

The number of new believers is increasing dramatically in Cuba, and the shortage of pastors becomes more acute.  Our support helps cover costs for training workshops and meals for two years. We sent a team to Guanabacoa in 2005.

MEXICO

Over the past eight years, our Senior High Youth have made four summer trips to our sister congregation, The Roca Eterna Church in Ticul.   We also support the work of the San Pablo Presbyterian Seminary in Merida, where pastors, teachers, and musicians are trained for service in the Yucatan.

HAITI

Covenant Hospital is located in the village of Mombin Crochu on a northeast mountain plateau of Haiti.  We assist in supporting the vital ministry at the 22-bed medical facility.

ZAMBIA

The nurseries in Lusaka are "safe homes" where an infant or child may go when a mother dies or no one is there to provide care.  Most children stay six to twelve months until they can be returned to their family, tribe, or to another caring family.

KENYA

Spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ by enabling Christians in Africa to have a place to worship and minister to others is the vision of the church leaders in Kenya.  Stu Ross, a familiar face from a recent WMC, and our own Drew Stockstill, led our church members on a mission trip in 2008, and will lead a trip in 2010.

EGYPT

Ramez Atallah, General Secretary of the Bible Society, visited our church in October, 2005. His organization is committed to raising awareness about the importance of the Bible and putting the Bible in the hands of as many people in Egypt as possible.

MALAWI

Our support has helped dig over 100 shallow wells in Malawi over the last few years.  These wells are instrumental in providing safe, clean drinking water for countless villagers.  The church in Malawi also provides insecticide treated mosquito nets to decrease the spread of malaria, one of the three major killers of children around the world.

ETHIOPIA

Evangelists in Ethiopia, such as our friend, Urgessa Biru, spread the Word of Christ to Muslims in the Horn of Africa, as well as to the untouchable underclass of Southern Ethiopia who are now able to meet together, eat together, and associate with each other as equals in Christ. Evangelists are trained in a small Bible training school in need of more educational programs to meet the needs of this exploding new population of believers.  Two of our members traveled to Ethiopia in 2006.

ISRAEL

Our work helps support the Bethlehem Bible College, a training ground for Christian ministers in the Middle East.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

We are engaged in ongoing hurricane relief through the Presbyterian Church in Bay St. Louis.  Over the past year, we've sent over 75 volunteers and many building materials.

MISSIONARIES

            Scott and Melanie Smith, India

            Don and Martha Wehmeyer, Mexico

            Richard and Barbara Altork, Philippines

Charles and Diane Wonnenberg, South Dakota

            Caryl Weinberg, PCUSA mission coordinator

            Dan and Elizabeth Turk, Madagascar

Ted and Sue Wright, Zambia

These missionaries are not only brothers and sisters in Christ, but are personal friends to our church. Barbara Altork, a child of FPC, and her husband Richard, visited Thomasville in November, 2005 and the Turks followed in December. Many will remember the Wonnenbergs from the World Mission Conference in 2005 and their outreach to the nine American Indian reservations in South Dakota. Meanwhile the Wrights continue the work of Bill and Nancy Warlick began years ago in Zambia.

YOUTH GROUP PARTNERSHIP

Through Compassion International, our youth group sponsors children in Peru, Haiti, India, and Uganda.  We regularly exchange letters and updates on our special friends.
